Dear DPS Community,
After hearing from families, staff and community members across the district through the Redrawing our District Equitably initiative, I have made a recommendation to the Board of Education to make no changes to school boundaries and enrollment zones this fall. The district has completed all work in regard to this initiative and existing school boundaries and enrollment zones will remain in place for the 2027-28 school year.
What We Heard From Our Community
Over the past six months, we have engaged with our community in each of the six regions of the district to discuss adjusting school boundaries and enrollment zones as part of Executive Limitation 19 (EL-19).
Through this process, we heard from many of you that this topic is important because it directly impacts the schools and services students have access to. Whether you attended an engagement session, filled out the survey or reached out directly via email, we thank all who expressed your desires and concerns for this process. We invite you to explore the feedback we received:
Overview of Community Feedback: The summary of the key themes and priorities shared by our community throughout the engagement process is now available in the Overview of Community Feedback Document (Google Doc).
Spring Survey Results: In the spring/summer, we held community engagement sessions virtually and gathered feedback via the spring survey. High-level results of the spring survey are now available in the Redrawing Our District Equitably Survey Report (Google Slides).
Fall Engagement Meeting Findings: When we returned for the 2026-27 school year, we held in-person listening sessions in each of the six regions. A summary of each meeting is available in the Community Listening Sessions Slide Deck (Google Slides).
What Happens Next: Update on the Board of Education’s Policy Review
The Board has begun working on a revised Executive Limitation, EL-18, which would consolidate EL-18 School Consolidations and Closures and EL-19 Enrollment Boundaries and Zones. There could be Board of Education action on this policy as soon as Oct. 26, 2026. If there are school closures in the future, then school boundary or enrollment zone changes would likely be required as part of a closure. However, those changes would take place after the 2027-28 school year. We anticipate sharing an update on this work later this fall if the Board of Education formally adopts the revised policy.
Given the upcoming SchoolChoice Round 1 window (Dec. 1 to Jan. 19), we want to reassure families that school boundaries and enrollment zones will remain unchanged for the 2027-28 school year.
We will continue to keep our district community updated as the Board completes its work. Thank you for your continued engagement and partnership as we work to ensure equitable access to schools and educational opportunities for all DPS students.
In collaboration,
Dr. Alex Marrero
Superintendent
