Disability Awareness and Dyslexia Awareness Month

Dear Team DPS,

October marks both Disability Awareness Month and Dyslexia Awareness Month — and this year also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This landmark law transformed public education by guaranteeing services and supports for students with disabilities from birth through age 21, ensuring access and opportunity for all learners.

In Denver Public Schools, our commitment remains clear to accelerate trajectories, expand inclusive opportunities and ensure that all learners thrive. This year, we are celebrating progress and expanding programs, including:

  • For the second consecutive year, DPS achieved a 100% compliance rating on the Colorado Department of Education’s Special Education District Yearly Determination Report, receiving statewide recognition in excellence. As Colorado’s largest district, this reflects the dedication of our educators, service providers and staff in ensuring high-quality Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for every student.

  • In response to national student enrollment trends, DPS expanded autism programming across the city to ensure all students receive individualized and necessary supports and programming.

  • The DPS Special Education Department hosted its first Inclusive Practices Summit, bringing together academic teams from across the district focused on evidence-based strategies to strengthen Tier 1 instruction, ensuring students with disabilities have access to high-quality learning in every classroom.

  • DPS has continued to strengthen family and community partnerships through the Denver Special Education Advisory Committee (DSEAC) and expanded partnerships with organizations such as Special Olympics Colorado, elevating parent and family voice and support while increasing inclusive opportunities for students.

We recognize the tireless dedication of our special education teachers, service providers, paraprofessionals, leaders and staff. Their commitment ensures that students with disabilities not only receive the supports they need, but also experience belonging, pride and opportunity in their schools.

While October offers a moment to celebrate, our work continues year-round. Together, we honor 50 years of IDEA by renewing our commitment to building schools where Every Learner Thrives.

In collaboration,

Dr. Alex Marrero
