Dear West Campus Staff, Students and Families,
I want to thank the entire West campus school community for your feedback and participation in the virtual principal hiring process to provide feedback on our new West Middle School & West High School finalist candidates. Despite the challenges of these uncertain times, we had many responses from staff, students and families. This included questions you wanted the principal candidates to address, major areas of emphasis for the new school leaders to focus on during their video presentations, and survey feedback after you viewed the principal candidate videos. All your feedback was carefully reviewed by Superintendent Cordova as part of the body of evidence in making her selection.
Based on all the feedback, we believe that the candidates recommended by the West Leadership Academy Board of Advisors and West Early College School Accountability Committee are the best match for the new West Middle School & West High School. We are excited to announce that Mia Martinez-Lopez will be the new principal of West High School and Dr. Boris Costa-Guerra will be the new principal of West Middle School that will open in the 2021-2022 school year.
Beginning January 1, 2021, both Ms. Martinez-Lopez and Dr. Boris Costa-Guerra will be transitioning to a Year-0 principal role so that they can work with the new school design teams, the staff, students and families to plan for the new school launches. As they transition off their current roles with West Early College and West Leadership Academy, we are excited to announce that former Northwest principals Grant Varveris will be the acting principal of West Leadership Academy and Lynn Heintzman will be the acting principal of West Early College for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. They both will work closely with Ms. Martinez-Lopez and Dr. Costa-Guerra and the respective school leadership teams and myself, to ensure a smooth transition for second semester to carry on the WLA & WEC mission, vision, values and instructional improvement priorities through June 2020.
Ms. Heintzman is a retired Denver Public Schools principal. She served as the principal of Brown International Academy, for five years prior to retiring. She has recently served as the acting principal at Manual High School, an early college high school, and two elementary schools in NW Denver who had had students feed into West. Mr. Grant Varveris was the former principal of Skinner Middle School in NW Denver and most recently has been supporting West Leadership Academy in an interim leadership capacity. They both are extremely excited and honored to be working with West students, staff and community, and they are committed to making this final semester a positive and smooth one through the end of the school year.
As Ms. Martinez-Lopez shared, “I am grateful to those who have believed in my intentions and abilities to lead West High School. I am deeply committed to the success of our school community as we prepare our students for college and career success in the West tradition. West is my family and with this opportunity, I am honored to serve as your principal. Cowboys are forever!” And as Dr. Costa-Guerra shared, “I am ecstatic, humbled, and filled with gratitude to have been chosen to serve as the new West Middle School principal. I commit to ensuring each student has access to a supportive and safe environment where they can identify, pursue, and begin to actualize their dreams. I look forward to working with the West community to continue to collectively build our new vision for a middle school where each of our students excel.”
Please join me in congratulating Mia Martinez-Lopez and Dr. Boris Costa-Guerra and welcoming Ms. Heintzman and Mr. Varveris! We will soon share information about opportunities to connect with the second semester acting principals and get engaged on the new design process with our leaders of the new schools.
