Denver – Two Denver Public Schools achieved the highest growth in the state in English language arts and math on the annual Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) assessments. That means elementary students from University Prep-Steele Street made more progress in math than all other students statewide while high school students from KIPP Northeast Denver Leadership Academy outpaced all other Colorado students in literacy.
Principals, teachers and students from the two schools celebrated their “state’s best” accomplishments today with Denver Board of Education Members Rachele Espiritu and Lisa Flores, and Superintendent Tom Boasberg.
“We are so glad to have University Prep and KIPP as options for our families,” said Espiritu, who represents Northeast Denver, including KIPP. Flores represents Northwest Denver, including University Prep.
Boasberg, standing in the midst of students from both schools, pointed out they had shown more academic progress than nearly 800,000 kids across Colorado.
“Turn to the person next to you, and give a high five and say, ‘The best students in the state,’ ” he encouraged as students eagerly complied.
Altogether, eight Denver schools were among the top 20 schools in the state for growth in English language arts and seven schools were among the top 20 in math. The lists below show these schools as well as their growth scores; note that 50 is the state average on a 100-point scale:
