Writing an essay in Education Week, Denver Public Schools Superintendent Susana Cordova expressed a deep need for students to know they are welcome, and for schools to be safe and welcoming places. In her commentary (shared in its entirety courtesy of Education Week), Cordova cites recent events targeting immigrant families as significant challenges.
In the wake of the horrible tragedy in El Paso, Texas, and the ICE raids in Mississippi that have come crashing down on a nation already awash in rising racial tension and vilification of immigrant families, we in the Denver public school district are now more than ever focused on being a safe harbor for all of our children and families.
As superintendent, it was wonderful to be back at our schools this week, welcoming back our students, staff, and families for the new school year.
In painful and fearful times like these, our children, especially, get so much comfort and strength from being around their friends and caring adults.
We can’t erase the pain and fear. There’s no making sense of the hatred and cruelty that some now use to lash out at the heart and soul of America. We are a nation of immigrants that has grown in strength and spirit because—when we are at our best—we welcome families looking for a better life.
The best we can do for our children now is to be here for them—to listen, to teach, to play, to bring them the moments of carefree joy that childhood is supposed to be about. This is what schools should do: We should teach our students and help make sure that they feel loved, which is particularly important when they may feel consumed by fear and surrounded by hate.
In Denver, a wonderfully diverse, immigrant-rich community, we are proud of the support we provide our immigrant neighbors. Our board of education has unanimously passed a resolution affirming our commitment to “do everything in [our] lawful power to protect our students’ confidential information and ensure that our students’ learning environments are not disrupted by immigration enforcement actions.” We work to make sure all of our families are aware of their rights in protecting their children’s access to our schools and their education, regardless of immigration status. We also strive to make sure that all of our families know the wide array of support services available to them through the school district and our partner agencies. I collaborate with the other leaders who are part of the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents on ways we can support our students and families, and we stand ready to help any other districts in these efforts.
This is a hard and painful time for anyone who cares deeply about making our nation a safe and welcoming place for all our students and our immigrant and migrant families.
I get strength and comfort from helping to make sure our schools are that safe and welcoming place. The start of the new school year was such a big boost to my morale: my first school visit, my first wide, electric smile from an excited student, my first hug.
The best part of being back in school is the strength and comfort I get back from being part of a community dedicated to increasing opportunities for all our kids. When I see our students eyes light up while learning, when I hear their laughter ring out, because they feel safe and secure, I know we are doing our job.

يجب أن تنعم المدارس، قبل كل شيء، بالأمان وأن تحتضن التلاميذ وأسرهم وتبذل الرعاية لهم. ولا شك أن هذا ضروري لضمان تحقيق معلمينا وطلابنا للتميز داخل الصف.
وفي أعقاب المأساة الشنيعة التي شهدتها مدينة إل باسو بولاية تكساس والغارات التي تشنها وكالة إنفاذ قوانين الهجرة والجمارك (ICE) في ميسيسبي والتي لحقت بأمة تعج بالتوتر العنصري المتزايد والافتراء على الأسر المهاجرة، فنحن في منطقة دنفر التعليمية (DPS) نركز أكثر من أي وقت مضى على أن نكون ملاذاً آمناً لجميع أبنائنا وأسرنا.

ففي أوقات مؤلمة ومخيفة كهذه، يستمد أطفالنا على وجه الخصوص الكثير من الارتياح والقوة إذا أحيطوا بأصدقائهم وببالغين يهتمون بهم.
لا يمكننا أن نمحو الألم والخوف بيد أنه ليس هناك أي مغزى للكراهية والقسوة التي يستخدمها البعض في شن هجوم على قلب وروح الولايات المتحدة. نحن بلد مهاجرين ازدهرت من حيث القوة والروح لأننا – حين نكون أفضل ما نكون – نرحب بالأسر الباحثة عن حياة أفضل.
إن أفضل ما نبذله لأطفالنا في الوقت الحالي هو أن نكون بجانبهم – أن نستمع لهم ونعلمهم ونلعب معهم ونضمن لهم لحظات سعادة بلا قلق والتي بلا شك هي أسمى معاني الطفولة. هذا ما ينبغي للمدارس القيام به: يجب أن نعلم طلابنا ونتأكد أنهم يشعرون بالحب، الأمر الذي يمثل أهمية كبيرة حين ينهكهم الخوف وتحيط بهم الكراهية.
نحن في دنفر، وهي مجتمع متنوع حافل بالمهاجرين، نشعر بالفخر إزاء الدعم الذي نقدمه لجيراننا المهاجرين. كان مجلس التعليم قد مرر بالإجماع قراراً يؤكّد التزامنا بأن نبذل كل ما هو في سلطتنا القانونية لنحمي معلومات طلابنا السرية لنضمن أن بيئات تعلم الطلاب لا تعطلها إجراءات إنفاذ الهجرة”. نحن نعمل للتأكد أن جميع أسرنا يدركون حقوقهم فيما يخص حماية وصول أبنائهم لمدارسنا وتعليمهم بغض النظر عن وضع الهجرة الخاص بهم. كما نسعى جاهدين أن نتأكد أن أسرنا يدركون توفر مجموعة واسعة من خدمات الدعم من خلال المنطقة التعليمية والوكالات الشريكة لنا. إنني أتعاون مع القادة الآخرين الذي يشكلون جزءاً من رابطة مديري المناطق التعليمية اللاتينيين بشأن سبل دعم طلابنا وأسرنا ونحن مستعدون لدعم أي منطقة تعليمية في هذه الجهود.

Las escuelas, ante todo, deben ser lugares seguros, acogedores y solidarios para nuestros estudiantes y sus familias. Esto es absolutamente esencial para garantizar que nuestros maestros y estudiantes sobresalgan en el salón de clases.
Como consecuencia de la horrible tragedia en El Paso, Texas, y las redadas de ICE en Misisipi que han dañado a un país actualmente plagado de tensiones raciales y la denigración de las familias inmigrantes, el Distrito de las Escuelas Públicas de Denver está enfocado ahora más que nunca en ser un refugio seguro para todos nuestros niños y familias.
“En tiempos dolorosos y temibles como los que estamos viviendo, nuestros niños, sobre todo, se reconfortan y fortalecen de estar junto a sus amigos y adultos solidarios”.

En tiempos dolorosos y temibles como los que estamos viviendo, nuestros niños, sobre todo, se reconfortan y fortalecen de estar junto a sus amigos y adultos solidarios.
No podemos borrar el dolor ni el temor. No puede entenderse el odio y la crueldad que algunos emplean ahora para atacar verbalmente el corazón y el alma de Estados Unidos. Somos un país de inmigrantes cuya fuerza y espíritu crecen porque, cuando damos lo mejor de nosotros mismos, acogemos a familias que vienen en busca de una vida mejor.
Lo mejor que podemos hacer por nuestros niños en la actualidad es estar ahí para ellos: escucharlos, enseñarles, jugar, aportarles momentos de alegría sin preocupaciones, lo que se supone que debería ser la infancia. Esto es lo que las escuelas deberían hacer: Deberíamos enseñar a nuestros estudiantes y asegurarnos de que se sientan amados, lo cual es particularmente importante cuando es posible que se sientan consumidos por el miedo y rodeados de odio.

Consigo fuerza y consuelo al garantizar que nuestras escuelas sean lugares seguros y acogedores. El inicio del nuevo año escolar me generó un gran entusiasmo: mi primera visita a las escuelas, mi primera gran e intensa sonrisa de un emocionado estudiante, mi primer abrazo.
La mejor parte de regresar a la escuela es la fortaleza y el consuelo que me proporciona formar parte de una comunidad dedicada a incrementar las oportunidades para todos nuestros niños. Cuando veo que se iluminan los ojos de los estudiantes mientras aprenden, cuando escucho resonar su risa porque se sienten seguros en un lugar acogedor, sé que estamos haciendo nuestro trabajo.
