It is with extreme sadness that I share the news of the death of 16-year-old East High School student Luis Garcia. East staff and students described Luis as a student who not only excelled on the soccer pitch, but also was a hard worker who did well academically, and who was always positive, caring and lived the East core value of Integrity. His passion for soccer and the dedication and leadership he shared amongst his teammates is a continued inspiration for the adults and students who were able to get to know him in his time with us.
Luis was shot near the East campus on Feb. 13. As a DPS parent and as the leader of the school district, I am devastated by the death of this young student today. This terrible loss is being felt throughout our entire school district and community. We are ensuring that educators and students at East High School have access to grief counselors to help during this very difficult time. These counselors will be available throughout the week and as needed in the future. Denver Public Schools is assisting detectives with the Denver Police Department in their investigation of the incident. Our thoughts are with Luis’ family, as well as the students, families and educators of East High School and the greater Denver community.
