Dear DPS Community,
Each school day, our educators provide our scholars with rigorous, relevant and fun learning environments that allow our young people to thrive in and beyond our schools, and accomplish their dreams after they graduate. Thank you for your passion and continuing commitment to our efforts.
Earlier this week, the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) released preliminary school ratings on the 2022 “Transitional School Performance Framework” (SPF). DPS used its own version of the SPF for more than a decade. That is no longer the case. Based on the Spring 2022 decision by the Board of Education and recommendations of the Reimagine SPF Committee, we are now using the CDE SPF, which relies almost exclusively on CMAS, PSAT, SAT and ACCESS scores.
In the past, many considered SPF data as a tool to compare schools’ performance to other schools, districts and statewide results. Some also used it as a way to find a school’s strengths and identify areas for improvement. We do not believe that the 2022 SPF data should be used in that way. We say this because the pandemic led to a modified state testing schedule. We say this because there were also low participation rates across DPS in the spring of 2021. We say this because this data is only a representation of the small number of students who participated in testing. Dr. Anthony Smith, our Deputy Superintendent of Schools, provides more details in this video.
Please know that because we have reservations about the comprehensive nature of the student growth data in the 2022 SPF, we will not use this information for accountability purposes. We are advising our families to consider additional academic and non-academic information when assessing the quality of a school. To reiterate Dr. Smith in the video, the 2022 SPF data is in no way an accurate representation of an entire student body at most of our schools. Your school leader can provide additional context and answer your questions.
Again, thank you for your ongoing support of our efforts to improve educational opportunities for all of our scholars.
En colaboración.
Dr. Alex Marrero
