Dear DPS Community:
I hope you’re having an enjoyable and relaxing summer. This has been a tremendously exciting time for me and my family. I arrived here in Denver just after the Fourth, and have been having a great time getting to know the city before the family joins me in the coming weeks.
I’ve already had a chance to check out Red Rocks and Coors Field a bit; I saw our baseball and softball teams in action at Metro State University for the championship games; and I joined the JFK baseball program, Major League Baseball, and the Rockies for the ribbon-cutting of the Commanders’ new baseball fields.
Denver’s families care so much about and give so much to their schools. That’s a big reason I was thrilled to have the opportunity to come here. DPS is one of the nation’s leading metropolitan school districts. With a vision that every child will succeed, DPS takes pride in striving for excellence, by supporting a brighter future for all scholars. It has been my goal to lead an urban district with a dedicated community and, in partnership, raise the bar for all students and eliminate any barriers that may stand between any child and a great education. I am incredibly grateful to be provided that opportunity here in DPS.
High-quality public education is a cornerstone of our democratic society. And we must do more to ensure that we are harnessing its power and fulfilling its promise of opening a limitless future to our children. That comes with unique challenges in a large, urban district. Together, we can climb above any obstacle and lift up all of our children.
My preparation, education, work, community and other life experiences have me prepared and excited to seize this opportunity to drive our schools forward. My own personal values and professional record demonstrate a strong and clear passion and ability for leading change and significantly improving student achievement.
I would like to thank the Board of Education for the confidence in my leadership and want to thank the Denver community for the support you have shown me thus far. The decision to come to DPS is personal for my family. We want to be part of a strong community –as well as a school district that is the right fit for our children, Alexa, 4, who will be attending the Dual Language program at Trevista and Axel, 2, who is deciding whether he wants to join his mother, Suzy in exploring Denver for a year or enrolling in an Early Childhood experience.
Here’s wishing you and your loved ones a great rest of the summer. I am truly looking forward to working alongside you next school year to care for, educate, and lift up our scholars.
In collaboration,
Dr. Alex Marrero
Superintendent
