annual Eighth Grade Career Fair, where more than 3,700 students learned about hundreds of different career options. This annual event was designed by our incredible DPS Counseling Team in the Office of College and Career Readiness and showcasing careers and companies here in Colorado.

It’s one of my favorite events of the year — watching wide-eyed middle school students approach business leaders and education professionals and ask questions like, “What do you like about your job?” and “How much money would I make starting out?”

As educators, we recognize that early exposure to careers is key. In fact, in the nine years since our counseling team first began this annual event, we have received feedback from seniors that this specific event and the intentional career and college planning that follows throughout their DPS journey helped them see what’s possible for their futures.

“It’s fun talking to companies and learning about all the jobs out there,” shared an eighth-grade student this week.

Starting these conversations early gives our students and their schools more time to plan out coursework, activities and work-based learning opportunities that align with each student’s career and college goals, translating to a stronger likelihood of success.

“The Eighth Grade Career Fair allows students at an early age to begin planning their future and setting long- and short-term goals,” said Miriam Linden, our DPS counseling coordinator who leads the event. “When students can begin to see the career possibilities that exist, then they can begin to make connections between their education and how it directly correlates to their career goals.”

Today at our career fair, our students get to begin to elect their future career paths,” said Nicole Veltzé, Assistant Superintendent, Division of Secondary Education.

Thank you, DPS counselors, educators, higher-education institutions, community members and volunteers for making meaningful opportunities like our career fair possible for our students. Because of this collaboration, our students can see new ideas and feel supported to forge ahead.

Being ready for college and career is one of our Denver Plan Goals and we know that getting kids inspired about what comes after high school is critical. Many of our students will be first-generation college students and with the Eighth Grade Career Fair, we are giving all of our students early exposure to high-paying careers and empowering them with information about how to be on a path to success.

Statement on Amendment 73 Election Results

In Tuesday night’s election, we were disappointed to see that Amendment 73 did not pass. This ballot measure would have provided our schools roughly $150 million in additional funding for teacher compensation, supporting higher needs students and expanding early childhood education opportunities.

In Colorado, we fund our schools an estimated $2,100 per student less than the national average. We know our kids deserve better than that. Our state needs to increase our investment in education, and all of our voices play a vital role in this effort. It’s critical to be able to compensate our professionals fairly and meet the equity needs of our students who live in poverty, are learning English, or require special attention due to unique needs. These funds are sorely needed.

We’ll continue to press our legislators to make a change and encourage educators, families and community members to contact their elected representatives to ensure their voice is heard too.

Ahead of Veterans Day, many of our educators have led discussions with their students about the dedication and commitment of those who serve our country.Somos DPS video

When Christine Damon — an intervention reading and writing teacher at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College — learned that many of her students had never met a veteran, she invited two special guests. Damon invited her father and grandfather to join in for a discussion about all of the different ways students can serve their community.

North High School’s Boys Soccer Team.

North High School’s Boys Soccer Team will be competing for the 4A State Championship! The North High School Vikings will face defending champs — the Air Academy Kadets — for the state title. This is the Vikings’ first ever trip to the state finals.

Get tickets and join us in cheering on the team at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Nov. 10, at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Empoderamos a los estudiantes con un camino a seguir accesible

Estimado equipo de DPS:

El pasado martes, les pedimos a todos los estudiantes de octavo grado que empezaran el proceso de tomar decisiones informadas. Fue el día de las elecciones, por supuesto, pero también celebramos nuestra Feria de Profesiones para Estudiantes de Octavo Grado anual, en la que más de 3,700 alumnos aprendieron sobre distintas opciones profesionales. Este evento anual fue diseñado por nuestro increíble Equipo de Orientación de DPS de la Oficina de Preparación para la Vida Universitaria y Profesional, y exhibió las profesiones y las compañías de Colorado.

Es uno de mis eventos favoritos del año, ver a los asombrados estudiantes de secundaria acercarse a hablar con líderes empresariales y profesionales educativos y hacer preguntas como: “¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de su trabajo?” y “¿Cuánto dinero ganaría nada más empezar?”.

Como educadores, reconocemos que la exposición temprana a las profesiones es fundamental. De hecho, en los nueve años en que nuestro equipo de orientación ha organizado este evento anual, los estudiantes de 12.º grado nos han comentado sobre este evento en concreto y sobre la planificación profesional y universitaria intencional que sigue durante su formación en DPS, que les ha ayudado a visualizar las posibilidades de sus futuros.

“Es divertido hablar con compañías y aprender todos los trabajos que existen”, comentó un estudiante de octavo grado esta semana.

Comenzar estas conversaciones temprano les da los estudiantes y a las escuelas más tiempo para planificar el trabajo, las actividades y las oportunidades de aprendizaje laboral que se alinean con las metas profesionales y universitarias de cada alumno, lo cual se traduce en mejores probabilidades de éxito.

“La Feria de Profesiones para Estudiantes de Octavo Grado permite que los alumnos, desde una edad temprana, empiecen a planear sus futuros y establezcan metas a largo plazo”, dijo Miriam Linden, nuestra coordinadora de orientación de DPS y líder del evento. “Cuando los estudiantes empiezan a ver las posibilidades profesionales existentes, pueden comenzar a establecer conexiones entre su formación y la manera en que se relaciona directamente con sus metas profesionales”.

“Queremos que los estudiantes se gradúen con la posibilidad de elegir su futuro y seguir el camino que más les interesa. Hoy, en el día de las elecciones, los adultos tienen la oportunidad de elegir sus futuros. Hoy, en la Feria de Profesiones, los estudiantes empiezan a elegir el camino profesional que desean seguir”, comentó Nicole Veltzé, superintendente asistente de la División de Educación Secundaria y Preparatoria.

Damos las gracias a los orientadores y maestros de DPS, a las instituciones de educación superior, a los integrantes de la comunidad y a los voluntarios por hacer que estas oportunidades significativas, como la Feria de Profesiones, sean toda una realidad para nuestros estudiantes. Gracias a esta colaboración, los estudiantes pueden percibir nuevas ideas y sentirse apoyados para seguir adelante.

Estar listos para la vida universitaria y profesional es una de las metas del Plan de Denver, y sabemos que es fundamental inspirar a los niños sobre las posibilidades tras graduarse de la escuela preparatoria. Muchos de nuestros estudiantes serán la primera generación de su familia en asistir a la universidad y, gracias a la Feria de Profesiones para Estudiantes de Octavo Grado, les estamos dando una exposición temprana a profesiones altamente remuneradas y empoderándolos para que cuenten con la información necesaria para abrirse camino al éxito.
