Course Description

Biotechnology is a global, growing industry with careers in health care, research, forensics, and even NASA! In this hands-on class, you’ll explore real-world science like a true scientist—using professional lab equipment to investigate how vaccines are made, what GMOs are, how bacteria can glow using jellyfish genes, and how DNA is used in forensics and paternity testing.

You'll build foundational lab skills and prepare for real job opportunities in biotech—from startups to research centers. Students can earn a nationally recognized lab technician certification through the University of Florida’s (UF) Biotechnology Assistant Credentialing Exam (BACE). UF is part of our CTSO and collaboration between high school students in biotechnology seeking opportunities to work in a lab post-high school or in the summer. Industry partner is UC Health.

Specific Success Criteria

  • Students should be comfortable with basic biology and chemistry standards.

  • Students should be willing to engage in lab based activities and group work.

  • Students should be willing to review data and participate in lab based sciences.

  • Students will be required to sit for the BACE examination at the end of the course.
