Three years ago, Principal Jesús Rodríguez and Barber Eddie Diaz had a conversation at the barbershop during a haircut about the positive difference a great haircut can make for a student’s self esteem. That conversation led to Eddie offering to give free haircuts to our students at Trevista to reduce hardship in getting to the barbershop caused by transportation. The event started with three barbers volunteering their time and talent a few times a year to our most recent event that featured ten barbers! The main entrance at Trevista in the historic Horace Mann building is transformed into a barbershop with high tables, chairs, music, and great conversations taking place. In two hours, the ten barbers were able to offer 40+ free haircuts to students. We also partnered with Beauty in the Struggle to offer families free turkeys and toys for the students. The looks and smiles on the faces of our students are priceless when they see the finished result in the hand held mirrors and they are ready to go to school full of confidence and able to remain engaged in their learning.
