Wednesday marked the one-month anniversary of the tragic school shootings that took place Feb. 14 in Parkland, Florida. To commemorate the students who lost their lives and to protest gun violence, DPS students along with students across the country participated in National School Walkout Day.

More than 10,000 DPS students walked out of school to observe 17 minutes of silence and shared their thoughts and hopes around gun violence with their peers. Although DPS students were encouraged to stay on school grounds to express their views, nearly 2,000 students walked in solidarity to the State Capitol to share their voices with elected officials.

Additional activities held by students included:

  • McAuliffe International School students gathered in the formation of a heart to observe 17 minutes of silence.
  • Academia Ana Marie Sandoval parents and educators joined students hand-in-hand on a walk around the school perimeter.
  • Denver Discovery School students united in the cafeteria to hear from a student walkout organizer, then walked around the block in silence.
