Kunsmiller Creative Arts Academy (KCAA) held its first-ever Lunar New Year celebration on Friday, Jan. 27, 2017. At the inaugural event, participants had the opportunity to eat traditional Asian foods, share in traditional games and activities, and enjoy entertainment as students performed a number of Asian dances.
Tina Doan, a Vietnamese senior at KCAA, organized this festival as a way to give back to her school. For months leading up to this event, teachers at KCAA engaged their students in activities related to the Lunar New Year. In their lessons, they taught that lunar calendars are coordinated with the cycles of the moon, and several East Asian nations observe the Lunar New Year.
Doan hopes that many Asian cultures will continue to be celebrated and acknowledged throughout schools in the school district. She also shared that she hopes that the Lunar New Year celebration at her school will inspire others from different cultures within DPS to host similar events. According to Doan, her the event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the KCAA Student Board of Education, KCAA’s Asian-American families, KCAA school leaders and educators, and Dickey’s Barbecue Pit located at 3140 S. Wadsworth Blvd, Denver.
