SchoolChoice Provides Families with Equitable Access to the Best-fit School for Their Child
Denver – Denver Public Schools’ (DPS) award-winning, unified enrollment system is kicking off its seventh year, when families throughout Denver have the opportunity to choose the top schools for their children. The first round of DPS SchoolChoice for the 2018-19 school year begins Feb. 1 and ends Feb. 28 at 4 p.m.
The one-deadline, one-application SchoolChoice process gives every family equitable access to the school they think is best fit for their child, regardless of their address or background. During SchoolChoice, families can rank up to five of their students’ most-preferred schools on the SchoolChoice application. DPS then matches students to schools based on those preferences, as well as available space and school-admission priorities.
As an additional measure to ensure equity and work toward closing the opportunity gap, DPS has expanded a pilot program this year at some of its higher-performing, lower-poverty schools to prioritize enrollment for students eligible for free- and reduced-price lunch, an indicator of poverty.
This year’s SchoolChoice application process is online-only for the first time and DPS is providing additional resources to help families feel confident in the process. These resources include the SchoolChoice hotline at 720-423-3493 and trained staff at the front offices of all schools. Families can access the new, mobile-friendly online application at schoolchoice.dpsk12.org.
There also are resources for families who are still researching their school options, including the annual Great Schools Enrollment Guides and the new, online, mobile-friendly School Finder. Both are available at schoolchoice.dps.org. The best way for families to find their best-fit school is to visit schools in person and talk to leaders and staff.
For two years in a row, the Washington, D.C.-based think tank, The Brookings Institution, rated DPS No. 1 in the country for school choice among large districts. The SchoolChoice process ensures equity, consistency and simplicity in the district’s enrollment process. The approach is a crucial piece of the district’s vision of Every Child Succeeds. In working toward that vision, DPS is committed to the Denver Plan 2020 goal of placing Great Schools in Every Neighborhood.
