There is no bigger fan of books than Dr. Karen Powell, Principal at Montbello Career and Technical High School. It’s a love that started at a young age as a requirement: “My job as the oldest girl was to ensure that when we walked through a library, everyone came home with at least two books,” she said.
These days, Dr. Powell maintains that same rule with her high school students, who don’t have a permanent library of their own. Instead, Dr. Powell welcomed in a “pop-up” library – operated by DPS Library Services – to ensure students have the opportunity to both pick out interesting books and learn from new perspectives. The mobile library serves middle and high schools without a dedicated library.
“Without those experiences in school that they can take out of school, I feel like I will not have provided them with the best tool that will take them further in life. And reading is one of those tools,” said Dr. Powell.
