DPS Announces the Next Chief of Climate and Safety

With an unwavering commitment to the well-being and security of our students, staff, and community, Chief Cazzell brings a wealth of expertise and experience to this vital role.

Chief Cazzell will oversee and implement portions of the Long-Term Safety Plan that Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero will announce in late June.

“I am very proud to accept this role with Denver Public Schools,” said Chief Cazzell. “I am very aware of the work in front of us, and I am excited to get started on implementing the safety and security features of the new plan in support of our students, staff and community.”

Cazzell is well-equipped to lead the DPS safety team. He has been the Director of Safety and Security for Aurora (CO) Public Schools for more than eight years following his 22-year career with the Glendale (CO) Police Department, retiring as a Detective Sergeant. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Johnson & Wales University teaching undergraduate students in the criminal justice department.

“I know that Chief Cazzell will help DPS move forward in our ongoing commitment to providing a safe environment for every student to thrive,” said Dr. Marrero. “He will play a pivotal role in safeguarding our students and building trust among parents and staff.”

Chief Cazzell, who will start at DPS on July 10, holds a Bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University and a Master’s from Regis University.
