School District Buys Samsonite Campus to Help Keep Pace With Growing Enrollment in the Far Northeast

Denver – From the global headquarters of one of the world’s largest luggage manufacturers, to Denver Public Schools’ (DPS) newest campus, the Samsonite building in Far Northeast Denver now belongs to the school district. DPS is celebrating the $11.1 million purchase, made possible through bond funding, of the 113,000-square-foot building on a 13-acre site which houses the district’s High Tech Early College.

Factors that were considered in purchasing the property, which has the capacity to hold around 800 students, include the growing enrollment in Far Northeast Denver and the opportunity to own rather than lease space. A charter school affiliated with DPS converted the Samsonite campus into an educational facility and served students in the Montbello community in 2007. DPS has been leasing the property since 2012.

DPS Superintendent Tom Boasberg and Board of Education member Rachele Espiritu will also speak to the bond dollars that have gone into Far Northeast Denver.

Interview opportunities available.
