High Schools Districtwide Host “Signing Day” Events to Honor Their Senior Student Athletes
Denver – On Wednesday, Feb. 7, high schools throughout Denver Public Schools (DPS) participated in National Signing Day. Dozens of star athletes put pen to paper and wrote the first chapter of their college careers. National Signing Day is the first day that high school students can sign a letter-of-intent for college sports.
“Sports can be such a big part of our students’ school experience,” said Superintendent Tom Boasberg. “Offering quality athletic programs to our kids has obvious benefits for their fitness and health, and it’s also critical to our mission of supporting the whole child. We are so proud of the success these student athletes have seen here at DPS and are cheering them on as they continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.”
At Thomas Jefferson High School, Sydney Thompson signed on to play both basketball and soccer at Gillette College. Thompson is a five-sport athlete who lettered in football, basketball, track, softball and soccer. She also won the John Lynch Award, which recognizes student athletes who excel in academics, athletics and community involvement from Denver schools.
At East High School, Sam Carson signed on to play Soccer at Kenyon College. Carson served as East’s Varsity Soccer Captain and won First Team All-League, First Team All-State, All Rocky Mountain Team and DPS Player of the Year in 2017.
Several notable DPS alumni have seen success in both collegiate and professional sports. The Colorado Rockies’ Kyle Freeland is a proud Thomas Jefferson Spartan. Five-time NBA All-Star Chauncey Billups graduated from George Washington High School before playing for several NBA teams, including the Denver Nuggets, and South High School’s Calais Campbell went on to play football for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Arizona Cardinals.
