Denver Public Schools is ensuring that children receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. The Summer Meal Program, offered during summer months, provides wholesome meals to all children at no charge, regardless of income, race or religion.

Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does the need for good nutrition. Children who aren’t hungry learn better, perform better and feel better.

Nearly 70% of DPS students qualify for the federal free- and reduced-price lunch program. Across the nation, more than 18 million children receive free and reduced-price meals at school during the school year. In the summer months, that number drops to about three million.

The district’s Summer Food Service Program provides breakfast and lunch for all children 18 years and under without charge at participating school locations throughout the summer. Adults are also able to participate in the Summer Food Service Program for $3 per meal. Meals include foods made from whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and avoid sodium and fat. Many of them are made from scratch, using locally-sourced ingredients from nearby community gardens and Colorado farmers.
