Denver Public Schools DACA Statement

Jun. 19, 2020

Denver Public Schools Superintendent Susana Cordova and the Board of Education commends the Supreme Court ruling to uphold the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA program. We are thankful to the many voices who fought for these protections, and to those who bravely took a stand against injustice for our nation’s DREAMers.

Created by former President Barack Obama in 2012, DACA provides legal protection for hundreds of thousands of undocumented young immigrants brought into the country as children.

Our Safe and Welcoming School District resolution affirms our deep belief that our schools belong to everyone, regardless of their immigration status. DPS was the first school district in the nation to hire teachers under DACA. In Denver, many of these childhood immigrants, known as “DREAMers,” have attended DPS schools their entire lives and are DPS graduates who have built their lives in our community. These include highly skilled, very talented teachers in district classrooms. Many of these great educators are bilingual and can relate well to the lived experiences our students face.

The DACA program is critical to ensuring DPS can create the Safe and Welcoming environment necessary for students to thrive. When students can identify with educators and school leaders in our classrooms and buildings, they feel more at ease and have a better foundation for educational success. We cannot create the safe environment needed for learning without the support that DACA provides.

The DACA program has helped bring attract and retain our talented and critically needed teachers. It provides peace of mind and legal status to thousands of immigrant children and families in our community. It allows them to work, attend college and realize the promise of the American Dream. We remain committed to serving all students who come through our doors. Denver Public Schools is a district of rich diversity, and Team DPS lives by the values of compassion, inclusion, equity, and safety for all students.
