Denver Public Schools Announces Partnership with Children’s Hospital Colorado

Jan. 29, 2021

Dear DPS Community,

I’m excited to share an update on our efforts to make the COVID-19 vaccine available to our frontline, school-based staff.

Today, we have finalized the details of a partnership with Children’s Hospital Colorado (Children’s Colorado) that will allow us to offer vaccinations to all of our roughly 18,000 DPS employees and charter school staff members. This includes both the “above the line” staff who are currently receiving the vaccine, and the “below the line” staff who are the next priority group to be eligible for vaccination, hopefully by March or earlier, based on state guidelines and vaccine supplies. (As a reminder, the currently available COVID-19 vaccine includes two doses, with the second dose given several weeks after the first.)

We will prioritize team members who are frontline staff working with our students every day, in collaboration with union leadership, and we will be in contact with those employees, including steps on how appointments will be made with Children’s Colorado. We will be providing further details on the vaccination timeline and procedures with all of Team DPS as those plans are developed and confirmed.

DPS is not requiring employees to take the vaccine because we know this is an individual and personal choice for all staff members. However, we hope that a large number of our team will choose to take the vaccine in order to provide maximum protection for our staff and student communities. Staff members can reach out to their personal health care provider with any questions about the vaccine, or if they would prefer to receive the vaccine from them.

We’re very pleased to be entering into this partnership with one of the country’s premier healthcare providers. Children’s Colorado is ranked No. 6 on U.S. News and World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll. As a champion of kids’ health, Children’s Colorado has been advocating for the safe return to in-person learning and for the prioritization of the COVID-19 vaccine for school personnel. Making the COVID-19 vaccine available to all of our frontline, school-based staff is, of course, an important next step in working toward a return to more of a normal school year in the fall.

I’m tremendously grateful to our team and the leadership at Children’s Colorado for their hard work and collaboration in support of our students, educators, and families. And thank you to all of Team DPS for their advocacy, support, and commitment throughout all of the challenges we’ve faced throughout this past year.
