Who: Twenty-eight women facing adversity many of us can’t imagine take an important step to improve their lives by graduating from high school. They all have children in Denver Public Schools. They all speak Spanish. Yet they persevered and will stand tall to receive their diplomas.
What: Denver Public Schools opened six community hubs (family resource centers) last fall. Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero, whose mom was a Dominican immigrant, knows that the stronger the family, the stronger the student. Community hubs help with things like childcare, health care, clothing, food, and classes for language, citizenship and GEDs. This is the first graduating class from these hubs.
When: Saturday, June 3, 2023, 12 – 1:30 p.m. Dr. Marrero will deliver the keynote address.
Where: Lake Middle School, 1820 Lowell Blvd, Denver
Why Cover This: These moms now set the example for their children. Life is hard? Yes. You get knocked down? Yes. But that’s when you find out who you truly are. For many born in extreme poverty, a chance at an education seemed impossible. Now, with lifelong skills and a new sense of confidence, they can get a higher paying job, go to college and show their children that this is how it’s done.
* NOTE: The entire ceremony will be in Spanish but translators will be available.
