Greenwood Village, CO (Aug. 7, 2017)- Colorado State University-Global Campus (CSU-Global) and Denver Public Schools (DPS) are partnering to increase professional development opportunities for DPS educators who teach or want to qualify to teach dual enrollment courses. According to the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE), dual enrollment, where students take college classes and earn college credit while still in high school, is associated with a 23 percent increase in the likelihood of enrolling in college.
In order to increase opportunities for DPS educators and ultimately students, CSU-Global created a program that accelerates graduate level coursework in English and mathematics to support the credentialing for DPS teachers. Given that all the coursework is online, teachers can complete the program without disrupting their busy lives and careers.
“We are pleased to partner on an important program that supports DPS teachers,” said Dr. Jon Bellum, Provost and Executive Vice President at CSU-Global. “We want Denver students to have access to dual enrollment courses, and the graduate level courses in math and English created by CSU-Global help ensure DPS teachers have the credentials necessary to serve their students.”
The first cohort of nearly two dozen teachers comes from 12 schools across Denver. They began the program in June, will be taking courses year round, and are expected to complete in May 2018. Costs associated with this program are supported in part by grant funding and school leader support.
“Dual enrollment programs are an extremely successful and rapidly expanding strategy for ensuring students are ready for their future college and career aspirations. The teacher training partnership with CSU-Global – which provides a high-quality online degree program with maximum flexibility for busy teachers – is critical to ensuring that DPS has the internal capacity to continue to offer as many opportunities to students as possible,” said Dr. Kim Poast, Executive Director of the DPS Office of College and Career Readiness.
Available at all DPS high schools and at select charter schools, many dual-enrollment credits are transferable to a two- or four-year degree program. DPS is leading the state with the highest number of students participating in concurrent enrollment during the 2015-16 school year (totaling 2,531), according to a recent report released from CDHE.
Some program participants have taught dual enrollment previously, but now need additional coursework to maintain their qualifications, while others are responding to the significant demand for dual enrollment courses across the district.
Sixth-grade language arts teacher Raylene Kaufman is participating in the dual enrollment program to earn the teaching credentials she needs to be able to teach college-level English classes to ninth through twelfth graders. Kaufman teaches at Kunsmiller Creative Arts Academy, a K-12 arts-focused school in Denver.
“Dual enrollment is important to our students because it builds a culture of college readiness early on in their education,” said Raylene Kaufman, a DPS teacher participating in the dual enrollment program at CSU-Global. “It shows students that college is possible and it pushes teachers to think more about the urgency to get students prepared and ready for the next level.”
