Gay-Straight Alliance at McAuliffe Manual MS Partners with Local Artist to Create Mural
Submitted by Julie Malek, McAuliffe Manual Librarian and GSA Advisor
With the generous support of the DPS Foundation’s A-to-Z Fund Grant, we were able to solicit the support of local queer artist Adri Norris, whose work is displayed around the community. Adri helped us frame the story we wanted our mural to tell. That story was gathered by asking students and staff what it is like to be queer on the McAuliffe Manual campus.
From the responses to our questions, we learned that our community is a welcoming place for queer folks to explore their identity and become who they want to be. Several students mentioned the idea of our school being a cocoon that allowed them to become butterflies: thus the theme for the mural. The process allowed students to participate in the creation of the mural with the support of teachers and our artist in residence. The butterflies are all done with the colors of the different LGBTQ+ flags.
We know that we still have work to do to create the space we want for all of our students to feel comfortable on our campus, but this mural is a huge and beautiful symbol of what we are working towards.
