Tech
any
arts schools have no technical theater departments.
Only the best do. When most people think about
techies, they think they're just the people
who do the dirty work. And it's true, techies
do drill and saw a lot, but it's not all we
do. Every costume, every set, and every make-up
design comes from our imaginations; it's our
artwork.
Techies do a lot more than people give them
credit for. Many people think that they could
get by with out the techies. That may be true,
but who would want to. When the costumes and
scenery are wonderful, the show is wonderful.
The lights, the stage, the props, the costumes,
and the make-up all create an atmosphere that
would make any show worth seeing.
Creating a show is long but exciting process.
There's a lot of research and planning involved.
Once that's done, different crews start to
build and sew. After that, sets and lights
are set up, and costumes are fitted. After
technical rehearsals, the show is perfect.
Every performance should be flawless.
There are many things that the tech department
can prepare you for. Being a techie allows
you to take part in the excitement in the theater
without being an actor. You could be a make-up
artist, costume designer, set designer, stage
hand, lighting operator, and so much more.
The tech department prepares you to work in
any of these fields and a number of others.
Techies are starting to get noticed. People
are starting to realize that every good show
needs us. Techies are winning awards and getting
recognized for their accomplishments. It's
a large field, and an important one. The tech
department at DSA get's you started on the
skills you need to make a career out of being
a techie. It takes a lot of dedication, but
technical theater is easy to get passionate
about.
