Creative Writing at the Denver School of the
Arts is a seven level program. Students audition to enter
at any grade level from sixth through twelfth and may continue
to be accepted through their senior years.
First year students (regardless of grade)
are beginning students and work to teacher generated writing
assignments.
Students accepted for a second to seventh
time are advanced students who write their own contracts.
Every year Creative Writers are required to demonstrate their
ability to interface writing with other art forms. To read
some of the award winning
writings of the students, check out the awards for one
of last year's competitions.
- Level two students write and complete six
six week contracts.
- Level three students complete four nine
week contracts.
- Level four students are required to complete
four nine week contracts and 80 pages of a continuous novella.
- Level five students complete three twelve
week contracts and a book of 52 writing exercises which
are published with 20 examples of completed assignments
by the student and his friends.
- Level six students work on two semester
contracts and fulfill an internship outside the school.
- Level seven students are allowed to publish
a chap book of their own writing and present a senior show
that demonstrates their ability to interface their own writing
with at least one other art form.
The Creative Writing department sponsors
a yearly literary magazine called Calling Upon Calliope which
is available in May and may be purchased by sending a check
