Creative Writing Department

Creative Writing at the Denver School of the Arts is a seven level program. Students audition to enter at any grade level from sixth through twelfth and may continue to be accepted through their senior years.

First year students (regardless of grade) are beginning students and work to teacher generated writing assignments.

Students accepted for a second to seventh time are advanced students who write their own contracts. Every year Creative Writers are required to demonstrate their ability to interface writing with other art forms. To read some of the award winning writings of the students, check out the awards for one of last year's competitions.

  • Level two students write and complete six six week contracts.
  • Level three students complete four nine week contracts.
  • Level four students are required to complete four nine week contracts and 80 pages of a continuous novella.
  • Level five students complete three twelve week contracts and a book of 52 writing exercises which are published with 20 examples of completed assignments by the student and his friends.
  • Level six students work on two semester contracts and fulfill an internship outside the school.
  • Level seven students are allowed to publish a chap book of their own writing and present a senior show that demonstrates their ability to interface their own writing with at least one other art form.

The Creative Writing department sponsors a yearly literary magazine called Calling Upon Calliope which is available in May and may be purchased by sending a check for $15.00 to: The Write Place, Denver School of the Arts, 150 So. Pearl, Denver, CO 80209
