Parent Education
And Preschool Program
For over seventy years, the Parent Education And Preschool Program has served as a fundamental part of what Emily Griffith Opportunity School provides for the citizens of Denver.
Each year over 300 parents and 500 preschool children benefit from participation in this nurturing and supportive program.
The program impacts the entire family. Parents' self-esteem grows as confidence in their parenting skills improves. And parents model the importance of education by attending classes while children learn in a stimulating pre-school environment nearby.
About the Program
This affordable program meets in 16 elementary schools around the city.
Groups meet weekly for the entire school year so the program is of sufficient duration to have a major impact on both parents and children. There is an 8-week quarter fee. Please check the EGOS website at www.egos-school.com for more information, or call 303-756-3611.
Topics for each class are chosen by parents to meet their needs. The classes encourage peer research and presentation, with the teacher as facilitator, so parents are actively involved in learning.
Parents provide emotional support for each other and exchange helpful information. Parenting, child development, family relationships, homemaking skills, health and safety, consumer education, and community resources form the basic syllabus structure.
As a result of this program, parents are better able to handle the day-to day concerns of raising young children and maintaining a household.
Parents develop more realistic expectations of their child based upon an understanding of child development and growth. They learn to foster development through stimulating activities and to maintain and reinforce consistent behavior expectations. They also learn appropriate techniques for providing guidance to young children.
All of the learning, which takes place for both parent and child, pays off immediately. Children and parents are more prepared for the school experience and for assuming responsibility for their role in it.
Family attitudes toward education and parental involvement in large measure determine the educational success of children. Due to all the societal and family pressures placed on education today, the Parent Education Program plays a pivotal role in helping ensure the success for students and families.
