Policy EGAEC- Network Connections (Connection to DPS Net)

The District has authorized the Department of Technology Services (DoTS) to serve as the trustees of the district's voice, video, and data network (DPSNet). In order to maintain the integrity of network services, DoTS has implemented a Technical Architecture Review Committee (TARC). The TARC reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and is made up of technical and non-technical district staff, appointed by the CTO. It is the intent of this policy to provide a standardized and controllable network environment in support of the mission of the Denver Public Schools.

The TARC is charged with reviewing, approving, and setting standards for all hardware and software for use on the DPSNet. All plans and projects that have a technology component that utilizes the DPSNet must comply with published standards developed by TARC. Any use of DPSNet that is not included in the published standards requires review from the TARC for recommendation of approval by DoTS. Implementation of a project or plan could be delayed or cancelled if enough time is not allowed for TARC to review the technology components. It is the responsibility of the individuals proposing the plan or project to prepare and present technical materials for review by TARC.

DPSNet is an electronic communications system connecting computers, telephones, video systems, and individuals throughout the district. The operation of DPSNet provides both in-district and worldwide access to a vast resource of knowledge, information, and the ability to effectively conduct the district's business. Data communication conducted over the district's network is not private (see Internet Policy and Electronic Mail Policy). The district's goal in providing this service is to promote educational opportunities, facilitate resource sharing, innovation, and communication. The use of the district's network is a privilege, not a right, and must be treated as such by all users. Users must adhere to the guidelines of this policy in order to acquire and maintain network access. Compliance with guidelines and standards is critical to ensure a reliable and supportable network environment.

Persons who knowingly or otherwise operate non-standard equipment or run software that disrupts normal network services, inappropriately uses the network, or interferes with the normal operation of equipment and approved software may be denied access to the network and face possible disciplinary action.

The following policies are enacted:

1. Connection of non-standard equipment to DPSNet requires approval of the TARC before it is implemented.

2. Use of non-standard software requires approval of the TARC before it is installed and/or configured and connected to DPSNet.

3. Relocation of equipment connected to DPSNet requires approval of DoTS authorized individuals. DoTS authorized individuals are those trained and supported by DoTS.

Approved: June 21, 2001
