Smiley Celebrates

DESCRIPTION: Smiley Middle School will host “Smiley Celebrates” in honor of Black History Month. Smiley celebrates is a community event highlighting visual arts, music, creative writing and food. The event is open to Park Hill neighbors along with Smiley families and students. Art projects created by students under the guidance of local artisan, Frank Tapy and students from the Rocky Mountain Art of College & Design (RMCAD) will be displayed throughout the school. The Smiley Cougar band will be performing under the direction of music teacher, Russell Kopperud. Poetry readings will be presented in the auditorium. A southern-style dinner will be served starting at 6 pm and will be served continuously until the performances begin. Smiley was awarded the A - Z grant from the Denver Public Schools Foundation in support of “Smiley Celebrates”. In addition to its annual “Smiley Celebrates” event and daytime arts electives, Smiley Middle School offers After School Arts Program including choir (Tuesday) and visual arts (Thursday) from 2:45 - 4:00 p.m. This program is collaboration between Smiley’s PTSA and local choir director, Heidi Anderson and the Arts Garage, located in Park Hill. All programs at Smiley integrate the arts from a multicultural perspective. The After School Arts Program is funded by a grant awarded by Denver Public Schools.
