Wellness in DPS

DESCRIPTION: Childhood obesity is rising to the top of agendas everywhere, from the private to the public sector. This generation of children is the first generation with a shorter life expectancy that its parents due to the complications of excess weight. This event will highlight what DPS is doing to promote school wellness, including on the progress of the federally-mandated Wellness Policy (2006) and recommendations from the DPS Commission on School Nutrition & Physical Activity (2004). Topics include nutritional guidelines for vending and other foods on campus; nutrition education; standards for physical education; recess and other opportunities for physical activity; health research; Coordinated School Health; and height/weight (BMI) surveillance of students.
