December 1, 1999 For Immediate Release GILPIN ELEMENTARY FOURTH-GRADER RECEIVES CRIMESTOPPERS AWARD Gilpin Elementary School fourth-grader Jordan Barela was honored today by district officials and Denver Metro Crimestoppers for outstanding behavior. Jordan was at the playground earlier this school year when he discovered a gun. Remembering what they had been taught, Jordan and fifth-grader Stephon Montano went immediately to the office to tell an adult. The gun was retrieved without incident. "I'm really proud of them and that they would have enough common sense to come to the office," said Gilpin principal Janet Box. "It's gratifying to know that what we're teaching is making a difference." Gilpin is located at 24th and Arapahoe streets, just north of the downtown area. Jordan received a certificate, restaurant coupons and $50 from Crimestoppers. |
