October 4,1999 For Immediate Release CHARACTER EDUCATION RECEPTION TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5 Sandy McDonnell, chairman of McDonnell-Douglas, will be among the speakers at a kick-off reception for the Character Education Project. The reception will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, at the University Club. Among those scheduled to join McDonnell are Hank Brown, president of the University of Northern Colorado, Sue Edwards, president of the Denver Board of Education, Commissioner of Education William Moloney, and Clair Orr, chairman of the state Board of Education. Governor Bill Owens and Denver Mayor Wellington Webb, both supporters of Character Education, will send representatives to the reception on their behalf. The Character Education Project is a partnership between DPS, the state Department of Education and Friends of Character Education. The project involves 10 DPS elementary schools. Under Character Education, each school identifies concrete strategies to make their school a more civil and caring community. Family support, parent education and community involvement are key components. One of the ten DPS schools - Slavens Elementary - was featured last month on "CBS Sunday Morning" in a documentary about Character Education.
