CITIZEN COMMITTEES BEING FORMED FOR NEW SOUTHWEST DENVER SCHOOL

The Board of Education is seeking applicants for two community-based committees that will help make decisions regarding the new school in Southwest Denver.

The new school is part of the district's five-year $305 million bond program, which will result in the construction of nine new schools and classroom additions at 19 others.

There are two sites being considered for the Southwest school. One site is east of Wadsworth Boulevard on South Jay Circle; the other is west of Wadsworth Boulevard, north of Belleview Avenue near South Field Street.

The construction committee will help decide the school's appearance. The program design committee will consider the type of educational program that should be offered.

The eight-member Construction Advisory Committee will include three parents or Denver residents, two teachers, one central staff person, one school administrator, and one maintenance representative.

The 11-member Program Design Advisory Committee will include five parents, three Denver residents, two teachers, and one school administrator.

Letters of application should include the following:

  • Applicant's name and address.
  • Indicate you are applying for the Southwest site.
  • Indicate whether you are applying for the Construction committee or the Program Design committee.
  • The membership category you are applying for -- parent, Denver resident, or teacher.
  • If you are a parent, include the names of your child or children and where they go to school.
  • Include the name of the neighborhood or community organization you represent, if any.
  • State the reasons why you believe you should be appointed.

Both committees will begin meeting in September and finish work about 10 weeks later.

Application deadline is September 8. Applications should be mailed or delivered to the Denver Board of Education, Room 705, Denver Public Schools, 900 Grant St., Denver, CO 80203.
