SCHOOL ACTIVITIES HONOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH

The following is a sampling of the school activities that are planned as part of the February, 1999 recognition of African-American History Month.

• At McGlone Elementary School (4500 Crown Blvd.), each grade level is preparing a 10-minute performance for an all-school assembly on February 24. Also, the Student Council announces two trivia questions on the intercom each day. One question is for intermediate grades, one for primary. Classrooms have all day to answer the question and at the end of the month, the classroom with the most winning answers will receive a trophy and a certificate.
• At Bradley Elementary School (3051 S. Elm Ct.), the Gove Middle School Choir will provide a music assembly on February 25 at 10 a.m.
• Montclair Elementary School activities began in January. Classrooms have studied African folktales and heard speakers from Kenya and Ghana. This month, all classrooms are studying African American History as related to specific individuals and events. A class of fourth- and fifth-graders led by teacher Cenobia Hampton will present a play later this month. Montclair is located at 1151 Newport St.
• In teacher Jean Hainesworth's class at Sabin Elementary School (3050 S. Vrain St.), an African-American quilt is being stitched together. Also, oral reports are being given on famous African-Americans of today and yesterday.
• At Thomas Jefferson High School, members of the Interact Club (sponsored in part by DTC Rotary) are reading daily stories "on the air" regarding African-Americans who have made a contribution to science, medicine, the arts, etc. The school's Communications Central handles pictures, video, or music to bring out each person's story. Thomas Jefferson High School is located at 3950 S. Holly St.
• When Arun Gandhi and his wife Sananda visit Denison Montessori on February 25, eight students will recite verses by Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that emphasize peace and justice. Denison is located at 1821 S. Yates St.
