Board Approves DATA Charter School Contract Renewal

The Denver Public Schools (DPS) Board of Education tonight approved the renewal of the Denver Arts and Technology Academy's (DATA) charter school contract for a two-year probationary term.

"We have agreed to renew DATA's charter because its governing board has agreed to make the management and operational changes needed to improve the school," said DPS board member, Jill Conrad. "It is now up to DATA to prove that it is up to this challenge."

The board decided to approve the renewal, which it had previously denied, after DATA's governing board agreed to a series of new, stringent oversight requirements designed to improve the school's governance, leadership capacity, and educational program.  Throughout its probationary term, the school will also be required to demonstrate substantial academic growth and achievement as measured by the district's new school performance framework.

"Denver Public Schools is committed to holding all of its charter schools accountable for high student achievement and effective operations and management," said DPS Director of Charter Schools, Parker Baxter. "The agreement we have reached with DATA, together with the implementation of the district's new School Performance Framework, will both ensure accountability and create the conditions necessary for sustained school improvement."
