New Board Officers Announced
Denver Public Schools (DPS) Board of Education tonight re-elected Theresa Peña as its president. The board also elected Michelle Moss as Vice President; and Bruce Hoyt as Treasurer; and Jill Conrad as Secretary.
"I have enjoyed leading the Board of Education for the last two years," said Board President Theresa Peña. "I look forward to continue the momentum generated by the dedication of board members and hard work of district staff to ensure better opportunities for the children, families, and employees we serve."
Prior to the election of new officers, newly-elected Board Member Arturo Jimenez was sworn-in, alongside re-elected Board members Theresa Peña and Bruce Hoyt. Pena represents Director-at-Large, while Hoyt represents District 1 in Southeast Denver, and Jimenez will now serve District 5 in Northwest Denver, Rev. Lucia Guzman's old district which she represented for eight years.
"I feel very proud to be selected as the representative for District 5; we have so much important work ahead of us," said Arturo Jimenez. "I'm really ready to get in there and offer my experience to implement the Denver Plan, get parents to embrace the Denver Plan, and bring the level of academic achievement up for the kids."
The Board of Education bid farewell to Lucia Guzman, who was term-limited after serving District 5 since November 1999. Guzman worked tirelessly to represent the Northwest Denver community for eight years. During her tenure, Rev. Guzman was instrumental in establishing the highly popular dual-language programs at Academia Sandoval and Bryant-Webster K-8 and the International Baccalaureate programs at Brown Elementary School and Lake Middle School. She thoughtfully guided the reforms at North High School and establishment of the North/Valdez campus. Guzman led the district's efforts to ensure equitable benefits for all DPS employees and has been a champion for community and parent engagement throughout the district.
"DPS and Denver are forever indebted to Rev. Lucia Guzman for her work on behalf of Denver's kids," said Bennet. "We will carry her example and passion forward."
