DPS Students Sustain Positive Trends

Denver Public Schools (DPS) students showed district-wide gains in math and writing in the 2007 CSAP test, although the overall performance for the district was largely unchanged. The Colorado Department of Education released the scores earlier today.

"Although not satisfied with this year's results," said Superintendent Michael Bennet, "our gains in math and writing are promising and I have confidence in the direction we are heading."

"We are proud of our teachers, principals, and students for their hard work," said Chief Academic Officer Dr. Jaime Aquino. "We were able to sustain last year gains and improved in math and writing this year, all while implementing robust instructional reforms throughout the district."

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

The overall performance for DPS was unchanged. DPS students' growth did exceed the state's in lectura, math, writing, and escritura in overall test scores. This year, DPS' change was better or equal to the state's on 61.3% (19 out of 31) of CSAP tests this year.

"Clearly, we have a long way to go, but we are heading in the right direction," said Bennet.

CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT IN MATH AND WRITING PERFORMANCE

DPS beat the state in 6 out of 8 math tests and the overall gains exceeded the state. Students in 6th and 7th grade math showed impressive gains.

In writing, DPS beat the state in 6 out of 8 tests, with the overall gains also exceeding the state. The 7th grade showed impressive gains in writing.
