Lincoln Elementary Students Won First Place In The We The People: Project Citizen Showcase
The students are among a select group of forty students who will represent five states at the Project Citizen National Showcase in conjunction with the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, August 5-8, 2007.
The students spent many weeks learning about laws and policies and the process of making changes in government. They learned that a public policy is a law, rule or action that federal, state, or local government adopts to solve a social problem and that Public Policy deliberation is the basic activity of self government. Students chose a problem in the community and then came up with a solution to the problem.
Due to the recent lack of funding for para-professionals, the students chose to examine public school funding and how they could generate more money for the schools. One idea that surfaced was to introduce a new scratch lottery ticket where all of the proceeds go to local schools. Upon further research, the students discovered that a number of other states already have education lotteries and they are very successful.
The following students presented their policy on Thursday, May 10, 2007, at the State Capitol: Dylan Hoffman, Tenlie Mourning, Heaven Valdez, Robert Guerra, Talicia Simes, Celestina Franco, Alex Gerrish, and Will Romero. Mrs. Tiffany Berry, the classroom teacher, has provided guidance for the students in the Project Citizen activity for several years and nearly won last year.
