Eagleton Students Perform At America SCORES National Poetry Slam

Two Eagleton Elementary 5th grade students, Akayla Martinez and Bobbie Martinez, accompanied by their teacher/coach Sarah Baird, were selected by the Denver SCORES organization to go to New York City from April 28th through May 1st to take part in the America SCORES National Poetry Slam.

Both students attend the Denver Scores Soccer and Writing after school program at Eagleton. Only 30 SCORES students from 15 cities around the United States participated in the poetry and performance workshops hosted by artists from Def Poetry Jam and Def Jam Records at the Nuyorican Café and HBO studios.

As part of America SCORES National Poetry Slam the students performed their poems in front of a live audience at HBO studios. The event, which benefited America SCORES, also honored hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and actor/rapper Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, whose grant initiatives help make SCORES programming possible.

For more information, please call Sarah Baird at 303-623-0181. Eagleton Elementary School is located at 880 Hooker Street, Denver.
