East High School To Celebrate National Championship Victory On Friday, May 4, 2007

Denver East High School won the national championship of We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution, a competition on the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. After three days of simulated congressional hearings, during which students were required to apply constitutional principles and historical facts to contemporary situations, the Denver class emerged as national champions.

We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution features an intensive curriculum that provides students with comprehensive instruction on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and the principles and values they embody. The program is designed to promote an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of citizens in our constitutional democracy. When combined with the companion noncompetitive elementary and middle school programs, more than 28 million students have participated in the program during the past 20 years. The Denver East Constitutional Scholars team has represented the state of Colorado for the 18 of the 20 years the program has been in existence. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education under the Education for Democracy Act approved by Congress.

"I am so proud of the students," said Instructional Superintendent Janice Spearman. "Being a part of the Constitutional Scholars team is a life altering experience; one that is creating future voters who have a deep understanding of our government and its processes. These students have learned to problem solve at an extremely high level, a skill that will serve them well now and in the future," added Spearman.
