Hill Campus of Arts and Sciences Hosts Roundtable on Tuesday, May 22

Hill's Prominent Speakers meet with students and parents

Tuesday, May 22, 2007 from 6:00-7:00 p.m., marks the culmination in a series of speakers to visit Hill Campus of Arts and Sciences. The luminaries, hosted by Dr. James Mann, an internist and gastroenterologist and retired chief of staff of St. Anthony Hospital, over the course of the school year have spoken to six, seventh and eighth graders on the paths they chose growing up. This past Wednesday, Dr. Benjamin Moultrie, a senior scientist and mathematician with IBM, engaged the Hill students with his tales that led him to one of the world's largest corporations. Hill's Roundtable brings these speakers together with students and parents to discuss what direction to take to embrace the future.

Mr. Don Roy, principal of Hill, in response to an article in Gifted Child Today, "Enhancing Culturally Diverse Males' Scholar Identity: Suggestions for Educators of Gifted Students," by Gilman W. Whiting, collaborated with Ms. Cassie Perlmutter, the school's Gifted and Talented teacher, to create a speakers' bureau. "This is a first step in acquainting our students with prominent African-American members of the community who are where they are by virtue of educational excellence."

The Roundtable concept was envisioned by Dr. Mann, the host of the series, in collaboration with Dr. Whiting, a professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and Ms. Perlmutter. These participants considered it paramount to bring all of the ideas and experiences expressed to date into an arena where parents as well as students could understand the task at hand: to make choices now that guarantee, to the greatest extent, success in the future.
