Ellis Elementary Receives $10,000 Grant From JFM Foundation

Ellis Elementary School's Holiday Wish List came late but true last month when the school received a check for $10,000 from the JFM Foundation, a continued sponsor of Ellis.

In December, Ellis wrote their Holiday Wish List and sent it out to various businesses in the community who have been strong supporters of our school. The list contained those "extras" that don't fit into the school's tight budget but would be nice to have in the school.

Last month, the JFM Foundation gave the school $10,000 toward the purchase of items on the Wish List. The school has purchased a giant 56" television to be used on indoor days, something they have wanted and needed for a long time. Until now, indoor days have been difficult for a school of over 500 students, all trying to sit and watch a standard television. The school has also ordered two new printers: a black and white printer to replace the teachers' failing printer, and a color printer for the office. The school will use some of the money for new banquet tables and chairs to be used during the school's annual 2-day International Festival celebrated each May, and to support office supplies.

Last autumn, Ellis received a grant from the JFM Foundation for $97,000 to support the school's goal of increasing student achievement by 10% as measured by CSAP. The grant supplied Ellis with a .5 ESL Resource Teacher, two part-time interventionist teachers, Language First books on tape program for English Language Learners, the Making Meaning reading program, professional development for STANDOUT Math, visual art, dance, and music productions and workshops, and the Open World Learning after-school technology program.

Ellis is a neighborhood school in an eclectic area of established homes, refugee families, and international cultures. The school is proud to have the JFM Foundation as a partner in helping its students soar towards excellence!
