Lincoln High And Denver East Take 4A And 5A State Basketball Championship
The Denver East Boys' Basketball Team took the state championship in front of 8,300 fans at the Coors Event Center in Boulder on Saturday night. The Angels soundly defeated previously undefeated Aurora Central by the score of 60-41 to capture the title for the 5A schools. East was relentless in their assault on the basket and dominated the game from beginning to end. Donnell Wells, a point guard, was named the Most Valuable Player for the tournament and fellow teammates Mookey Gilbert and Jordan Martinez were named to the All Tournament Team.
Abraham Lincoln High School also captured the 4A title by eliminating Ralston Valley High School by the score of 63-52. This is the first state basketball championship for the Lancers in school history. The Lancers capitalized on a 12-2 run in the early part of the 3rd quarter and outlasted the Mustangs for the victory. Jorge Gutierrez was named the Most Valuable Player for the tournament and teammate Kadeem Thomas was named to the All Tournament Team.
