Denver Public Schools Foundation Receives $10,000 Grant From Staples Foundation For Learning

Funds will support after-school programs for students in Denver Public Schools

Denver Public Schools (DPS) Foundation, which raises funds in support of the district's ambitious reform plan to improve student achievement, received a $10,000 grant from Staples Foundation for Learning. The grant will support Lights On After School, a district-wide initiative that provides after-school programs for DPS elementary and middle school students. This grant marks the first organization in Denver ever supported by Staples Foundation for Learning.

"Through Lights On After School, students are able to stay in a safe and supportive environment after the bell rings and participate in activities that have proven to significantly impact their achievement," said Barbara Berv, president and CEO of Denver Public Schools Foundation. "With support from organizations like Staples Foundation for Learning, we can continue to provide these important programs for our students for years to come."

"Lights On After School provides underserved youth with an after-school enrichment program that improves their academic success," said Joy Errico, spokesperson for Staples Foundation for Learning. "Staples Foundation for Learning values the educational support this program provides at-risk students throughout Denver."

The Lights on After School initiative was established in 2003 as a partnership among DPS Foundation, the City and County of Denver, and Mile High United Way to advance quality after-school programs for students in DPS. Currently, 85% of elementary and K-8 schools as well as 95% of middle schools (or 91 schools) offer after-school programs and serve approximately 9,000 students. These students get to choose from a wide range of enrichment and learning activities including music classes, chess clubs, a variety of team sports, homework clubs, computer & technology projects, theater programs, and art classes. Studies show that after-school programs contribute to improved grades and test scores, increased attendance at school, better work habits, and improved attitudes towards school.
