Emily Griffith Opportunity School Celebrates 90 Years In Denver

Emily Griffith Opportunity School will celebrate 90 years of service to Denver with a community and alumni open house featuring free classes and demonstrations on Tuesday, February 6, 2007.

The event will kick off at 11 a.m., with the first bowl of soup in the tradition of Emily Griffith who personally served soup to her students. The day will include free demonstrations and seminars on various topics and visitors can also take advantage of $1 hair cuts, manicures and hand massages. Live entertainment, school tours, historic displays and kids activities are also planned for the day. Events are scheduled from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Legendary educator Emily Griffith founded Opportunity School in 1916 to provide adults an opportunity to gain basic education and career training. She ran the school until 1933 when she retired. The school has remained a fixture in the landscape of Denver and today serves as Denver's technical college, providing career and technical training in 45 different areas including business, health sciences, aircraft maintenance, cosmetology, auto mechanics, and welding.

A regionally accredited technical college, Opportunity School offers transferable college credit with the most affordable tuition in the region. In addition, it boasts the largest English as a Second Language program in the state, serving over 2500 immigrant and refugee students annually. Opportunity School also offers adult basic education, corporate training and nearly 20 apprenticeships.

With a current enrollment of nearly 11,000 students, Emily Griffith Opportunity School is a public post-secondary institution dedicated to responding to the educational needs of the community.
