"Safe Routes To School" Pilot Program Announced At Ellis & Southmoor Elementary

The Denver Osteopathic Foundation and Denver Public Schools are announcing a pilot program "Safe Routes To School" at Ellis Elementary, Southmoor Elementary, South Street Elementary and Eagle Ridge Elementary for the 2006-07 school year.

The intent of this program is to increase the number of children walking and riding their bicycles to school by teaching them the skills they need to be safe pedestrians and cyclists. Children will be taught safety rules about walking or riding their bicycles. Children in ECE-2nd grade will receive the pedestrian curriculum. Children in 3rd-5th grade will receive the bicycle skills training workshops.

This program is a collaboration of Denver Public Schools, Douglas County Schools, PTA, local law enforcement and the Denver Osteopathic Foundation and is funded by the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The mission of the Denver Osteopathic Foundation is to educate the public in matters of health and safety. The Foundation staff with support from the Osteopathic medical community has been working with educators for over 10 years in support of this mission. They can be contacted at DOFound@aol.com
