Ellis Elementary And Openworld Learning Partner To Offer High-Quality After-School Reading, Writing, And Math Program
Principal Khoa Nguyen and the staff of Ellis Elementary School are proud to announce a partnership with OpenWorld Learning (OWL). This will allow Ellis and OWL to serve 120 students a year. OWL currently offers its program in seven other Denver Public Schools, all of which have shared their enthusiasm about the program.
The OWL program reinforces basic skills (reading, writing, and math) in a way that is creative, fun, and engaging to children. It also teaches the higher-order skills that have become crucial to success in the information age: advanced computer skills, logical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and complex communication. The OWL Program is offered four days a week, three hours a day, after school, and during the summer, at no cost to the student. The program includes a snack, vigorous physical exercise, 90 minutes of computer project time, and a half-hour of homework/writing support.
A central element in the OWL model is tapping the power of peer teaching. OWL teachers train a leadership team of 6-8 Student Leaders. OWL chooses Student Leaders who exemplify a love of learning, creativity, hard work, and a passion for helping others.
None of this wonderful work would be possible without the generous support of our donors. We would like to thank Federico Peña, Cindy Velasquez, Jim Polsfut, and the DPS Foundation for sponsoring the OWL Site at Ellis Elementary School and for being passionate supporters of the OWL Program since its founding in 2000.
