Schmitt Fifth-Graders Headed To Mesa Verde Tuesday, May 16
Fifth-grade students from Schmitt Elementary School will leave on a four-day trip to Mesa Verde National Park in southwestern Colorado on Tuesday, May 16. The group of about 50 students will leave at about 8:30 a.m. with many of community and corporate supporters there to see them off.
"We have provided financial aid to our neediest families in the years past for this annual trip through school fundraisers," said teacher Marilyn Freis. "However, the cost has soared throughout the years and some community contributors have stepped up with pledges to make this happen."
IKON Business Solutions and Publication Printers, Corp. have each donated $500; Burt/Kuni Honda contributed $350.
"Many of these youngsters have never been away from home or on a trip of this caliber," added Freis. "This trip often alters the way they view history, our environment, our resources and themselves. So we deeply appreciate the financial support to allow for this eye-opening experience."
Freis said students will discover the history of the Ancient Puebloans by visiting the ruins and learning about how the Puebloans lived, including how families were structured and what they did as a livelihood. Students also will study religion and how the weather and surrounding tribes affected their community's lifestyle.
Schmitt Elementary School is located at 1820 S. Vallejo St. The school's telephone number is 303-935-4651.
