FIrst Annual Balarat Trail Run Will Support Outdoor Education Activities For Denver Public Schools Students
On Saturday, June 3 at 10:00 a.m., a six-mile trail run and two-mile walk in Jamestown, Colorado will raise money to support outdoor education activities for Denver Public Schools students.
The Trail Run will take place at an elevation between 7,000 and 8,000 feet. The route is 80 percent on single track trails and 20 percent on dirt roads. The course will circle the Balarat Outdoor Education Center property and include scenic vistas of Longs Peak and the Indian Peaks. Prizes will be given for age group and overall winners.
Walkers will take in the spring wildflowers and the same stunning views of Rocky Mountain National Park and the Indian Peaks. Sturdy walking shoes and sunscreen are highly recommended.
Participants in the 1st Annual Balarat Trail Run/Walk will receive a snazzy commemorative T-shirt and post-event refreshments. (T-shirts guaranteed only to pre-May 20 registrants, so register early!)
Carpooling is strongly encouraged to minimize congestion and to provide enough parking for all participants. Parking is limited.
Registration before Saturday, May 20 is $25 for the run; $30 after that date. Registration for the walk is $18 before May 20; $20 after that date. Race day registration will begin at 9 a.m. Runners and walkers from the same family will be given a $5 per family member discount.
The event will support:
- Day trips for third-grade students to Denver Mountain Parks and the Museum of Nature and Science to explore Colorado wildlife and habitats.
- Two and three-day residential programs for fifth-grade students at our 720-acre, district owned outdoor education center to study Western history, environmental studies, leadership skills, and other applicable topics.
- Day trips for seventh-grade students to various Colorado State Parks to explore topics such as ecology, geology, orienteering, pre-historic Colorado, pioneers, land use and team building activities.
- 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students to participate as counselors for the residential programs. Counselors receive five credit hours in community service for their high school.
- 11th and 12th grade students to spend the semester with Balarat as an Eco-Intern, developing leadership skills and participating in studies of field science, ecology, and outdoor living.
