Morey Middle School Student Tom Roberts Advances To National Competition Of "Math Counts" In Washington, D.C.

Morey Middle School student Tom Roberts is headed to the national round of "Math Counts" in Washington, D.C. after placing as the number two 'mathlete' in Colorado at the state competition on Saturday, March 18. Roberts is the only DPS student going to nationals this year and the only DPS student who has qualified in 11 years.

Morey's entire team competed and performed extremely well. The team included Tom Roberts, Jordan Shelton, Beau Brown and Meagan Swisher. Tom Roberts finished seventh and entered the tense "countdown round" where individuals compete one-on-one. Tom beat six competitors in a row and finished second, in the end, overall.

"Beating six competitors in a row is almost unheard of and Tom Roberts' feat will go down in Morey history as one of the most incredible Mustang moments ever," said teacher Kevin Yelenik. "Congratulations to Tom Roberts, the number two 'mathlete' in all of Colorado."

Roberts also won half scholarships to either the University of Denver or the Colorado School of Mines with his finish. Joining him at nationals will be students from Fort Morgan (Scott McClary), Monumnet (Margaret Koehler) and Westminster (Eric Sheeder).

Morey Middle School is located at 840 E. 14th Ave. The school's telephone number is 720-424-0700.
